Suggestions for activating “do not log out” feature on Library computers: issue: LawReader has provided a user name and password for each computer in the library. When loaded, lawreader provides a cookie that allows those passwords to be remembered and automatically activated when the user logs on to www.lawreader.com. This cookie is not being stored or recognized on the library computer. We believe this issue may be solved by one or more of the following procedures. 1. The first suggestion for fixing the problem where the computer will not remember the LawReader passwords, is to examine the security levels of the library computer. If the firewall setting is set at maximum it will usually block all cookies. The cookie is necessary to remember the assigned password on the library computer and to forward it to www.lawreader.com’s server when the user logs in. We recommend a medium setting, and this provides generally adequate security but also allows cookies to be stored on the library computer’s harddrive. 2.The second suggestion is to evaluate the security setup of the library system. Some libraries have a system that deletes all cookies daily. This problem was quickly solved at the Carroll County Library when the library tech installed the lawreader passwords and then reinstalled their security system, this allows the cookies to be retained. 3. The third suggestion is to download a fix by Microsoft for their new Internet Explorer 7. This new browser software for IE7 was recently sent out and is believed to be causing many log on problems. This update for Windows XP may solve the log on issues, and will be necessary with the new Microsoft VISTA operating system which will be released sometime in 2007. Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ The update to download is KB904942 Microsoft describes this fix thusly: “Brief Description: Install this update to resolve HTTP authentication issues in Windows-based systems that do not appear until Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is installed.” |
