DO JUDGES NEED LAWREADER? Appellate Judges Several Ky. Appellate judges currently use LawReader. They have told us they appreciate LawReader’s collection of doctrines, ease of locating statutes, and collection of basic legal principles that allow them to quickly find authorities. LawReader is not Westlaw, and is not expected to replace Westlaw. LawReader is a legal digest that compliments Westlaw. One Justice on the Supreme Court told us recently that he was working on a list of assignments late one night, and as he came to his final project, he searched LawReader and found a topic that discussed the precise issue on which he was working. He said he was able to copy the article, which included citations and authorities, and a job he thought was going to take a couple of hours was completed in minutes. LawReader gave him a couple of hours of sleep that night…that was not a small thing to him. Law Clerks particularly like the options provided by LawReader. They have told us they wish AOC would add LawReader to the research tools at their disposal. With an ever growing caseload, our appellate judges need all the help they can get. LawReader provides the largest collection of CIRCUIT JUDGES Circuit Judges have sent us hundreds of forms, orders, instructions and other materials which have been placed in the LawReader data base, and which are all searchable by our Google search engines. Circuit Judges can rightfully say that they are a part of LawReader. New Judges particularly appreciate the collection of tools for judges, with admonitions, resources on objections, guidelines for trials, sentencing, and the massive evidence library. With LawReader available, a Circuit Judge is able to instantly call up a statute, rule or legal doctrine during a hearing. This allows him/her to evaluate the legal arguments being presented and to answer in real time. This reduces the delays and extra hearings by allowing the rapid disposition of legal issues. Circuit Judges appreciate the ability to scan through the weekly decisions of the Court of Appeals and the monthly decisions of the Supreme Court, to update themselves and stay current in the law. You can’t do that with Westlaw. Only LawReader provides a full synopsis of all reported and unreported decisions of DISTRICT JUDGES Much of the work of a District Judge is repetitive. LawReader’s forms, provide templates for orders and rulings on issues that have previously been litigated by others. LawReader provides virtually every jury instruction that is likely to come before a District Court in SENIOR STATUS JUDGES Senior Status Judges need the portability of LawReader. They can copy and paste orders and edit to suit their needs. Without a clerk or secretary they need LawReader’s wide collection of materials which allows them avoid having to reinvent the wheel with every new case. |
