You are here > OUR MAIN - LAW DIGEST INDEX > HELP - FAQ > CAN I SHEPHARDIZE OR USE WEST KEYCITES FROM LAWREADER?

While LawReader does not provide free access to allow you to Shephardize through Lexis or to find KeyCites through West Publishing, we can help you get to those services, but we do not have any connection to them and do not represent them.

We believe that before paying an extra charge to those services, you can do virtually the same thing with tools offered through FastCase and LawReader for which there is no extra charge.

LAWREADER NOW PROVIDES DIRECT LINKS TO ALLOW USERS TO

SHEPARDIZE with Lexis or to find KEYCITES from West.

After you have called up a case in FastCase, our case law data base, you may notice at the top of the page, links to allow you to Shephardize© your case or to find West © and to seek Key Cites.

These services are not included in your LawReader membership subscription fee.

We only provide a direct link from FastCase and LawReader to the Lexis site where you can Shephardize © your citations.  You must pay Lexis for such searches.

Please note that FastCase provides an freely accessible record of all cases which cite your current search case.  There is a number in the right hand column on the hits list. This number states the number of other cases that cite the case.  To access those other cases just clink on the number in the right hand column, and then call up the most current case to see if the case being referenced is still current law.

Likewise there is a link to West that allows the user to access their Key Cite services for a fee charged by West.

FastCase and LawReader do not have any business relationship with Lexis or West, and do not benefit in any way from any expenditure the user might make to either of those companies. Nor are we liable in any way for anything provided by those companies.    We only provide a direct link to assist our users in finding those services.

About Westlaw by Credit Card

Westlaw by credit card is a document retrieval service from West. With either a credit card or a Westlaw subscription, you have instant access to an extensive array of materials on Westlaw, including state and federal case law, statutes, and appellate briefs. You can find a document by simply entering a citation, case title, or docket number.

This service also provides access to KeyCite, the citation research service from West. You can quickly determine whether a case, statute, administrative decision, or federal regulation is good law and retrieve citing references.

Understanding Pricing

Your usage in this service can be paid by credit card or by having charges billed to your Westlaw account, if you have one. Pricing for retrieving documents and KeyCite results depends on which billing method you use.

During registration you establish a credit card account, to which charges are billed. If you have a Westlaw subscription and you also establish a credit card account, you determine your billing method at sign-on.

If you pay by credit card:

The price of retrieving a document or KeyCite result varies, depending on the type of document.

You will always be asked to confirm charges before your credit card is billed, and this prompt lists the price. Charges are applied monthly to the credit card you provided at registration.

Retrieving Documents
You can retrieve a document via the following methods:

·         By finding a document using its citation, title, or docket number (accessible from the Home page)

·         By clicking a link for a referenced document in a retrieved document

·         By clicking a document's hypertext link in a KeyCite result

If a Find request retrieves a list of documents, you are not charged until you click a link to display a document from that list.

Retrieving KeyCite Results
You can access KeyCite results via the following methods:

·         By typing a citation in the Check this citation in KeyCite text box or by using a KeyCite citation template (accessible from the Home page)

·         By clicking the KeyCite status flag (when available) at the top of a displayed document or next to a citation in a KeyCite result

Printing
Print charges are included in the cost of each retrieved document. In other words, while you are viewing a document you can print it at no extra charge.

If you have charges billed to your Westlaw account:

The cost for retrieving documents and KeyCite results depends on your current Westlaw subscription agreement (including WestlawPRO plans). Consult your plan to determine pricing. If you retrieve a document or KeyCite result outside of your current Westlaw subscription, you will be charged credit card rates.

You will always be asked to confirm charges for documents outside your Westlaw subscription before your account is billed.

Charges are added to your Westlaw bill.
